Biogas
Biogas is a clean, easily controlled, renewable alternative to fossil fuels.
Biogas, produced from organic waste such as manure and sewage, is a low-cost fuel that can be used as an alternative to natural gas for both heating and electricity. The production of biogas reduces emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, as well as reducing water pollution from nutrient run-off.
In Denmark there are two types of biogas plants:
- Joint biogas plants – which receive manure and waste from a number of farms, as well as industrial and household waste. The gas produces be these installations is sold to local CHP plants.
- Farm biogas plants – utilize the waste from a single farm; mainly manure.
Today there are about 20 joint biogas plants and 60 farm plants operating in Denmark.
The fuel utilization rate of biogas production is currently about 65%:
- 30% in the form of electricity
- 35% in the form of heating
Research is presently focused on increasing the efficiency of the plants.
