District Heating and Cooling

Dependable, cost-efficient and environmentally safe.

Flexible district heating and cooling ensures security of supply, increases efficiency and reduces fuel costs. This has been demonstrated in Denmark, where we have been developing and implementing innovative technologies related to district heating and cooling for decades. Today, almost 60% of the Danish population is connected to clean, efficient, and cost-efficient district heating systems, and district heating is an integral part of Danish energy policy.

Waste incineration, combined heat and power production and surplus heat from industrial processes are used to supply large-scale district heating networks. Connecting these different heat sources makes it possible to alternate between fuel sources such as coal, oil and natural gas; and renewable resources such as solar energy, waste and biomass.

For cooling purposes, the system uses cooling water from electricity generation, cold sea-water or ground water.

The Danish district heating sector is continuously engaged in further developing and refining technologies and components for district heating systems, focusing on large-scale technologically advanced solutions as well as smaller, simpler systems suitable for small local distribution systems.
