Energy-Efficient Power Plants

Danish power plants are among the most energy-efficient in the world.

Depending entirely on renewable energy sources is still not feasible – and will not be so in the foreseeable future. Keeping up with the global demand for a secure and stable supply of electrical energy still requires the use of conventional energy sources, such as coal-fired power plants.

The challenge is to increase energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions from these power plants. Danish companies are world-leading in developing technologies to ensure this. Due to continuous research and development, Denmark has developed and deployed some of the most efficient coal-fired power plants with very low emissions of greenhouse gases and other harmful substances.

Research and development is primarily aimed at:

• Increasing fuel combustion efficiency
• Introducing fuels with a lower fossil carbon content (biomass and waste)
• Capturing and storing CO2 produced during combustion

It is estimated that if every country in the world introduced the power plant technology developed and used in Denmark, global CO2 emissions could be reduced by as much as 30%.
