Efficient Gas Furnaces

As gas furnaces are very widely used for heating houses their efficiency have an enormous impact on overall energy expenditure and carbon dioxide emissions.

Gas furnaces are used in many industrial processes as well as to heat buildings. Both types have become increasingly effective during the last two decades. Modern high-efficiency furnaces built for installation in normal households often have an efficiency of more than 97% and even more efficient furnaces are still being developed. The most common fuel source for modern furnaces is natural gas.

When natural gas reserves were discovered in Danish waters in the seventies a move was made from oil towards natural gas for residential heating. Natural gas furnaces became a preferred method for heating in suburban areas where district heating was not feasible. Ever since, better and more efficient gas furnaces have replaced the earlier generations, cutting expenses for home owners as well as emissions of greenhouse gases.

This development has resulted in the accumulation of a massive body of expertise on the subject of efficient gas furnaces in Danish research institutions and companies. Denmark is expected to have enough natural gas to be self-reliant for at least ten more years, but the eventual dependency on natural gas from outside Denmark only serves to increase the incentive to develop even more efficient energy solutions.

The more effective the gas furnaces become, the less natural gas needs to be burned to supply the necessary heating. The result is a better economy for the owner of the furnace and less emission of CO2. In this way, efficient gas furnaces play an important role in the efforts being made against global warming.
