Branding strategy

A combined branding strategy for Bornholm was developed in 2008 as an essential aspect of the platform on which Bornholm’s future developments will be based. The core of the strategy is the vision of a Bright Green Island. Bright Green Island envisions Bornholm as an attractive green island based on 100% sustainable, renewable energy – an island community which is environmentally and ethically responsible in all its actions. By no later than 2014, Bornholm should have established a name for itself in the world as the Bright Green Island and be strongly positioned in the debate on climate change and energy sources.

The strategy’s basic principle is branding by doing. The strategy specifies a number of specific priority areas and actions, which convey Bornholm’s message to the world at large and at the same time help to implement Bornholm’s energy strategy goal of becoming a sustainable, carbon-neutral community. These actions should lead to more renewable energy, attract research projects, develop new technology, etc.

Visitors will get an insight into how to create a branding strategy and a shared vision which takes the specific community’s prerequisites as its point of departure and further develops them. The visit will also demonstrate how a combined branding strategy can be used as a force for change in a community.

Energy Strategy

Bornholm has the goal of becoming a sustainable, carbon-neutral island that is fully self-sufficient with renewable energy. The Regional Municipality of Bornholm adopted an Energy Strategy in 2008 to map out how the Bornholm community can completely phase out its use of fossil fuels.
The strategy’s strength is its dynamism and the fact that it can be revised as new technology gradually becomes available. The strategy was developed on the basis of a planning tool developed by Bornholm and a number of other European islands.

If a society has to undergo radical changes, all levels of society must be take part – from citizens to authorities – and, significantly, the change must be economically viable. For this reason, Bornholm’s Growth Forum supplemented the Energy Strategy in 2009 with an overarching strategy “Implementation of More Green Energy”, which maps out how this can be achieved. The strategy gives a high priority to Bornholm’s unique potential as an energy laboratory and as a destination for energy visits. This must occur through R&D collaboration between companies and knowledge institutions, and the establishment of a business cluster comprising Bornholm’s central energy stakeholders.

Participants will get an insight into how Bornholm has laid the groundwork for transforming the island into a sustainable green community and for generating green growth in the process.

Solar Thermal Plant Hillerød (ARCON)

In 2007-8 Hillerød District Heating has erected a 3.000 m² solar heating plant - complete with a technical centre.

The solar heating plant is an integrated part of the district heating in Hillerød Municipality, supplying energy for heating and hot water to homes and dwellings in the local area.

The solar collectors are situated on a baffle wall towards the 'Herredsvejen'. In order to reach the optimal orientation against the sun, the solar collectors have been installed at a total slope of 37° from horizontal. This slope makes it possible to reach a very high production in the three summer months when the sun is at its highest. Solar heating is produced when the liquid from the collectors heats up the district heating water in a big heat exchanger. From here the water is pumped into the district heating system and on to the consumers.

The district heating in this local area also uses pellets, whereas the remaining part of Hillerød (and Farum) uses natural gas from a major CHP plant in Hillerød. Via a fingertouch screen it is possible to get information about the whole solar heating plant and the part of the district heating network which is in contact with the solar heating plant.

Future Fritidshuset is the smartest holiday home – and the only of its kind – in Denmark. The house is certified to passive energy standards, self-sufficient in energy and designed with an emphasis on sustainable materials.

Future Fritidshuset is intelligent and eco-friendly and generates its own electricity and heat. The house is heated by solar heat supplemented by a heat pump which heats the house through a self-regulating underfloor heating system and provides ventilation and hot water for domestic use. 90% of the heat is reused via a heat-recovery system that also ensures optimum air ventilation. The house is equipped with IHC and a BlueSecure system allowing lighting, anti-theft protection, and smoke, gas and water alarms to be controlled using a mobile phone.

The exterior of the house is clad with black slate and is completely maintenance free. It is built using wood, granite and other materials originating on Bornholm. Future Fritidshuset is the result of a joint development effort involving a number of Bornholm companies and was designed for both the export market and the local market. In Bornholm, it will be built in a natural setting on the north coast with a view of the sea and the rocky coastline.

Visit QualiByg for a presentation of the house and the energy-technological solutions, and, if construction is ongoing, for a tour at the construction site.

Steenbergs - Passive-energy Buildings

Bornholm’s passive-energy BRIGHT HOUSE is the result of collaboration involving several different players in Bornholm’s construction sector. The intention of instigator STEENBERGs TEGNESTUE ApS was to design a detached bungalow for the system-built-house market of maximum quality in terms of materials and architecture and to minimise the environmental impact.

PHPP – the German certification standards for passive-house construction – were the point of departure for developing and designing BRIGHT HOUSE. By optimising the use of passive heat from the sun, a geothermal heat pump system – combined with thicker layers of insulation and the use of energy-efficient windows – the amount of heat consumed by the house is dramatically reduced, which also reduces the house’s dependence on an external heat supply.

By adding on other sources of renewable energy, such as by incorporating solar cells and solar panels into the roof, BRIGHT HOUSE has the potential to be self-sufficient with energy and even supply surplus energy to neighbours. The first BRIGHT HOUSE is expected to be built in the course of 2010.

40% of the energy consumed in the EU is used for heating and cooling buildings. Passive-energy houses can drastically reduce this figure, and this visit presents STEENBERGs Tegnestue’s solution for developing a system-built passive-energy house.

Cronborg – Heat pump reducing cost and improving environment

The level of self supplied renewable heating in the production at Færch Plast A/S is increased to a level of 97%. This is achieved by installing a propane heat pump. The heat pump is replacing an industrial groundwater cooling system, and thus also reducing the negative effect on groundwater temperature.

The Heat Pump will be set by the boiler in the warehouse of Færch Plast factory. The heat pump is supplied with water from an engine cooling circuit. A pipe is drilling between the boiler room and the central cooling.
The Heat Pumps will replace most of the heat demand on the existing gas boiler.
With the natural propane refrigerant in heat pump will be obtained a future of safe and environmentally friendly solution.

Finding the Sinners

A score of computer screens displaying black and white images of lungs, kidneys and bones are being closely studied as patients are scanned by the machines, which can reveal such disorders as cancer, cerebral haemorrhage, complicated fractures and much more. ”These machines are some of the really big energy consumers,” says Mogens Thomsen. As energy consultant in the region’s construction department, it is Mogens Thomsen’s responsibility to introduce an entirely new computer system which will monitor the Central Denmark Region’s energy usage everywhere from offices and residential units to the control room in which we are standing. ”We need a tool which will allow us to keep track of things all the time – it is hard to do something about a problem if you don’t know anything about it,” he explains. The system is so sensitive that he and his colleagues can monitor both whole buildings and individual rooms, and can take action if consumption levels get out of control, or seem illogical. ”You might for example wonder why some buildings use 30 percent of their energy at night, while they are empty. The explanation is usually that the air conditioning system is running, or a timer has been set incorrectly,” he continues.

Big visions in Odense

The dream of becoming CO2 neutral has put the new Odense University Hospital on the map even before the first sod has been cut in the project. The challenge now is to turn the dream into reality.

Who sows and who harvests?
Most people realise that investing in eco-friendly technology costs money, and it is also obvious that the investments will not bring returns for some years – and here lies one of the most important issues for the project in Odense. Investment in equipment is one thing – daily operations are another. And given the way that its finances are structured today, the region cannot include future savings from, for example, energy from solar panels in calculations of the actual construction costs of the new hospital. This means that the money for a solar cell installation has to come but of the same kitty as the money for the wards and rooms for patients.

The goZERO campaign offers a line of events encouraging the citizens in the municipality of Sønderborg to join in on finding clever solutions to the climate crisis. goZERO involves all citizens in being aware of climate issues and creates an interest in contributing to reduce the emission of CO2 and the spending of fossil fuels.

Two of the main events of the goZERO campaign are two competitions; one for the public and private schools of the area and one within the area of companies. The competitions are running simultaneously but involve two different target groups. The school competition looks into a child´s life and makes it fun to reduce the energy consumption, both at the school and at home. The company competition is targeted towards adults and what they can do to reduce their energy consumption on the workplace or at home. Companies participating in the competition saw energy savings of as much as 30-40 % on a week to week basis. Impressively, private citizens, also taking part in the campaign, saw more than twice as much.

The goZERO concept is a tool for a whole area to easily gain knowledge about climate change and energy efficiency and brings together a region in a joint effort to save energy and cut emissions. Single events, competitions, consultants and a specialized website where advices can be found are all included in the concept.
ZEROshop

The ZEROshop concept is an involvement program for retail businesses. Guided by leading experts the shops identify areas for climate friendly improvements with a return on investments less than or equal to a 2 year period. All shops have a clear focus on customer service and sales; therefore these are issues that must be taken into consideration.

The participating shops are rewarded with the ‘ZEROshop’ sticker. In this way the shops themselves becomes showcases for the program and the initiatives made in the Sønderborg-area.

Since the project started in September of 2009 4 businesses have been awarded the ZEROshop sticker and have made remarkable improvements. The 4 shops have already reduced their energy consumption with 10 – 35 % and further initiatives are underway. Many other shops have joined the project and the goal is to have 25 ZEROshops before end of the year.
Participation in ZEROshop features:

1 consultation from an energy consultant

Simple energy report

Guidance on purchasing new equipment

Opportunity to finance all initiatives over the electricity bill

'10-steps to saving money and CO2 in shops'

Materials for marketing their climate related efforts; the ZEROshop name and logo can freely be used in the general marketing of the shop

Capital is needed to grow cleantech start-ups to become successful growth companies able to supply their solutions to the market.

However, attracting venture capital or capital from other kinds of investors in exchange for a share of the company, is a difficult game, especially for tech companies with special focus on the technology and product.

1st Mile helps companies prepare themselves to face venture capitalists. This can include:

Preparation of a venture capital targeted business plan, including all the calculations and analyses the VC always makes

Training of the company key people to present exactly what is right to the investor

Identifying and setting up meetings with relevant VCs

Negotiations with VC's including terms and conditions in term sheets and investment agreements.
